We never see her face, yet somehow she still has something to say.

Backstory is a contemporary figurative painting built around gesture, attitude and the details we instinctively use to create a story about someone we’ve never met.

The elongated composition captures a woman from behind, one hand tucked casually into the back pocket of her jeans. Her identity remains deliberately hidden. Instead, posture and gesture become the portrait.

Layers of blue, turquoise, muted neutrals and flashes of warmer color move across both the figure and surrounding space. Expressive marks, scraped passages and visible texture interrupt the more recognizable details of denim, skin and fabric, allowing the figure to move between realism and abstraction.

At 48 inches tall, the narrow vertical format gives the figure an almost life-size presence while the unconventional crop creates the feeling of a moment caught in passing.

Backstory explores individuality, confidence and perception—and how little information we actually need before we begin inventing a story of our own.
