Between the Lines is an expressive contemporary portrait exploring the space between outward appearance and inner experience. The figure meets the viewer with a steady, almost searching gaze, while her features emerge through layers of blue, charcoal, turquoise, white, and muted flashes of pink.

Rather than fully resolving the portrait, areas of the figure dissolve into loose brushwork, scraped paint, gestural lines, and exposed canvas. Realism and abstraction continually interrupt one another—the eyes and features pull into focus while the surrounding marks resist a complete or polished image.

The restrained palette gives the work a quiet intensity. Small moments of warmer color break through the cooler surface, creating subtle points of tension and vulnerability within the predominantly blue-gray composition.

At 36 × 48 inches, the closely cropped figure has a substantial physical presence. Yet despite its scale, the painting feels introspective rather than imposing.

Between the Lines considers how much can remain unspoken while still being visible—the emotions, histories, contradictions, and private thoughts that exist beneath the surface of a person.
