R₀ > 57 is a satirical portrait of Albert Einstein created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the collision of science, politics, and human behavior that defined it.

Einstein appears wearing a protective face mask, surrounded by imagery drawn from both his scientific legacy and the visual language of the pandemic. Floating throughout the composition are representations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus—the now-familiar spherical forms with protruding spike proteins that became an unmistakable symbol of COVID-19.

Portions of the virus imagery are painted with fluorescent pigment. After exposure to light, these elements continue to glow in the dark, allowing the virus to remain visible even after the surrounding painting disappears into darkness—an intentional physical extension of the work’s subject.

Across the painting are mathematical notations based on Einstein’s calculations and handwriting. Among them is an equation created specifically for the piece:

R₀, or the basic reproduction number, is used in epidemiology to describe how readily an infectious disease can spread through a susceptible population. Here, the notation is deliberately exaggerated rather than presented as a literal epidemiological calculation. It serves as political satire—a visual criticism of the U.S. response to COVID-19 under President Donald Trump in 2020 and the consequences the artist associates with misinformation, leadership, and human behavior during the pandemic.

The idea culminates in Einstein’s famous observation incorporated into the painting:

“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the universe.”

Blending portraiture, scientific imagery, mathematics, fluorescent paint, and political commentary, R₀ > 57 documents a specific moment in history through satire. The work asks what happens when scientific reality collides with politics—and what role human behavior plays when the consequences become exponential.
